Doshimichi

Doshimichi is one of the favorite routes for cyclists heading to or from Mt. Fuji. It was the centerpiece of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Cycling course running from near Sagami Lake all the way up to Yamanaka Lake. It is named after Doshi, the village it runs through.

The first time I rode Doshimichi was discouraging because I expected to come over a pass much sooner than I did. It’s pretty much a steady, uphill slog gaining 700 meters over 40 km to the top of Yamabushi Pass (1088m). The second time I rode it, I rode down from Yamanaka Lake and really enjoyed it.

The scenery is fantastic running through some small villages nestled in pristine forests. The road runs next to the Doshi River which empties into the Sagami River at Lake Tsukui. At times the road runs on a ridge high above the river giving you some really nice views. There are several campgrounds along the lower part of the river.

The road brings you past some of the biggest mountains in the Tanzawa Range. There is a big “michi no eki” at the town of Doshi roughly at the half way point at the intersection of Hwy 24. A lot of motorists like to stop there and get refreshments.

After you make it up Yamabushi Pass it’s a short smooth descent down into Yamanaka Lake. I still prefer to ride this road from the top down. I often start near Gotemba, go over Kagosaka Pass on 139 and descend down into Yamanakako. A ride around Yamanaka Lake is always a very pleasant experience. I recommend a fruit stand located a short distance from the NE corner of the lake across from the Lawson’s. When they are in season he has some of the best peaches I’ve ever tasted.

I often turn onto or off of Doshimichi from Hwy 64 which runs through Lake Miyagase. It provides a more direct route to Atsugi or the other areas of the city.

Here’s a good video describing Doshi Michi and the Olympic course.
