East Coast of Izu

Izu is much hillier than Chiba with steep slopes going right up from the water. This topography creates some beautiful views.   I rode Hwy 135 along the east coast from Atami.  I took advantage of those times the road peeled off to the left and rode smaller roads along the coast.  Usually after the town or village I would then climb back up to 135.

I stopped a few times; one memorable stop was at the Jyogasaki Coast. I have been curious about this place for snorkeling. There were many divers there at a big diving resort located under the cliffs.

The road down the coast is beautiful.  I avoided the tunnels whenever I found a smaller road around the tunnel.  Some of them got pretty narrow.

I stopped at Shirahama Beach about 5 km before Shimoda. It is a beautiful white sand beach.  It's perhaps the most beautiful of the swimming beaches.

By the time I arrived in Shimoda my ride came in just over 90 km.  There were a lot of ups and downs.  My Strava shows over 2300 in elevation gain with the maximum elevation being 145m. The climbs by themselves weren't bad but the composite of ups and downs can be tiring.
I came back the next day and rode from Numazu to Shimoda, giving me a line around the coast of the peninsula. Check that ride out on Izu West Coast link.
