Urban Coast of Chiba

A few years ago, conquering the Chiba coast became my goal. I wanted to get a line on my Strava Heat Map that extended over the entire coastline of the prefecture so I started my trip in Kawasaki and rode up through Tokyo crossing the Edogawa into Chiba and on down the coast. The ride featured in the map ended at Kisarazu though I later came back and rode from there on down through Hamakanaya (the next segment).

Though it was an interesting ride, it’s not one that I will probably ever do again because it is not a smooth route for bicycle travel. I ended up riding on sidewalks, carrying my bike over overpasses and riding along uncomfortably busy roads.

The first part of the ride is familiar to me and one that I like. I rode from Kawasaki up through Shinagawa, through the Tsukiji Market area, and across the Sumida River into Toyosu. I went around Disneyland and crossed the Edo River into Chiba. I tried to stay as close to the water as I could riding Hwy 357 and Hwy 16. The coastal area from Chiba City south is packed with factories and docks for shipping. As I said, interesting but not made for a bicycle.

Kisarazu kind of marks the end of the urban area though, for purposes of dividing up the map into segments, I extended it down to Hamakanaya where I began a segment called the “Boso Flowerline”. Kisarazu is on the Chiba end of the Aqualine and home of a huge outlet mall.
